What Freedom Means To Me

I know the norm for the Fourth is barbeques, fireworks, swimming, and vacations. Yet I can't help but to ponder, on the 232nd anniversary of the birth of our country, if this is all that Independence Day has become to some people. I am so proud to live in America, where if I like, I can tattoo and pierce myself from top to bottom, or never, ever wear a piece of jewelry or a lick of make-up. I'm glad I am free to choose if I want to worship as a Catholic, a Methodist, a Baptist, a Muslim, a Jew, or even choose to be an atheist. I am free to wear a robe and head scarf, or a halter top and mini skirt, either way, it's my choice. I can vote Democrat, or I can vote Republican, I can vote Independent, or I can choose not to vote at all. My children go to school and receive an education, have wonderful resources and opportunities, and can go onto college once they've finished high school. We aren't the richest people in the world, but our bills are paid, our bellies are full, and heck, we even get to have some things that we just want, not that we need. As a woman, I am able to work full-time and help provide for my family, I have the same educational opportunities as my male counterparts, and am free to choose for myself, instead of the males in my life making all of the decisions. I am an American, and this is just part of what freedom and independence mean to me. I would have none of these things if it weren't for the brave men and women who have fought so hard to make and keep our country free. Today, in the midst of all of the scrumptious barbeque that I'll be eating, while floating in the pool lazily, and watching the breathtaking pyrotechnics fill the night sky, I will remind myself of what has been sacrificed for my freedom, and all of the wonderful blessings my life has because I live in America, and I'll tell myself how lucky I am, and tell America, "Happy Birthday!" What does freedom mean to you? What does Indepence Day mean, what should it mean, and how are you celebrating the birth of our nation? From my family to all of yours, I hope everyone has a Happy Fourth of July, a safe Independence Day. Leave A Comment Register Now To Comment!
