Facing fears

Everyone is afraid of something or other - whether it is a fear of creepy, crawly things of heights, speaking in public or any number of other things that send shivers up our spines and send our eyes and mouths agape.

Personally, my big fear is bees. It's the only fear I've never been able to control. At one time or another I've been wigged out by speaking in public and being really high up, but for the most part those are controllable fears - I can talk to an audience if I have to and I LOVE roller coasters even if I can't climb a ladder past the fourth or fifth rung.

Thing is, while I acknowledge my own scaredy-cat tendencies, I don't want my son to have those same fears - or really any for that matter.

I want him to run through life with gusto, never worrying about whether or not some creepy insect or snake is out to get him and not freaking out when he rides a thrilling ride.

So far, his only total fear is roller coasters - won't even try them. They go too fast, too high and do too many twirls. It's a fear I've tried to have him face on a few occasions unsuccessfully and, fortuantely, I know he can live a very full and fulfilling life without ever riding the Scream Machine. I still can't help but wish for fearlessness, though - for both of us.

So, ladies and gentlemen, what fears have you seen so far in your kids and how are you working to combat them?

  1. Honestly, my boys' lack of fears sometimes scare me. They run full tilt down the hill in our yard at dusk and don't break stride. I'm freaking out that they'll hit a hole or trip and break an arm. They swim out to the deeper waters at the river, laughing and giggling all the while, while I almost have a panic attack if I'm in over my head. They roam the woods around our home and never fear for anything. I try to instill in them that it is wonderful to not fear silly things, but to be aware of their surroundings. There are holes and sticks on that hill to trip them up. There are currents in deep water that can pull them away or under, there are snakes in the woods, and there are bad people in this world.

I wish for my little men to be fearless and brave but to also be practical and aware...I think they are doing a pretty good job myself.

  2. I hate rubber bands! I'm terrified of them. As for my kids - Hayden is my cautious one and Hallie fears nothing. Nothing at all! I can always count on him to be cautious and weigh the outcome prior to attempting it. Her...not a chance. I'm lucky if she blinks first.
